A New Hub for Food Relief and Social Connection in Greater Geelong
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Geelong, 21st March 2025 – Gateway Stronger Communities is proud to announce the official launch of its new Community Pantry and Community Connections Space, a vital initiative aimed at supporting individuals and families in the Greater Geelong area. The launch event was attended by State Member for Geelong, Ms. Christine Couzens MP, Councillor Melissa Cadwell, and other community leaders, alongside volunteers, supporters, and clients.
The new space is designed to provide more than just food relief. It offers a welcoming environment where people can access fresh food, enjoy a cup of coffee, and connect with others in a supportive and inclusive setting.
“This community pantry is done in such a way that people feel welcome to come in,” said Ms. Christine Couzens during her address. “They can go and have a coffee, sit down, and have a chat. They can collect some food, particularly fresh food, and that makes a difference in people’s lives. It also creates a social network for people. Rather than sitting at home on their own, they’ve got a place to come and enjoy each other’s company.”
Since its inception in June 2023, the Community Pantry has provided thousands of meals to families in need. Raynu Kay, one of the directors of Gateway Stronger Communities, shared the organisation’s journey and its vision for the future.
“From small beginnings, today we are connected to over 110 unique households, made up of about 300 individuals,” said Ms. Kay. “We provide support to an average of 30 households each week. But this initiative is about more than just food relief—it’s about building relationships and creating a sense of belonging. Many of the people we support have become friends, and that’s what makes this work so meaningful.”
The launch of the new space was made possible through the generous support of the Anthony Costa Foundation, as well as partnerships with organizations such as Geelong Foodshare, Portarlington Bakehouse, Share the Dignity, Kiwanis Geelong, and Gateway Church Geelong.
Ms. Couzens encouraged the community to spread the word about the pantry and its services. “It’s really important that we continue to support the community pantry and other community organisations in our great city of Geelong,” she said.
